Introducing Season One

Introduction to the Podcast Series: Navigating the Journey of Understanding Neurodivergent Families
I am excited to introduce you to season one of the podcast series that takes you into the heart of neurodivergent family life. In each episode, we explore the real-life experiences of families who are living with neurodivergent members. Whether you're on a journey of diagnosis or learning how to support someone you love, these stories provide insight, understanding, and inspiration. They show how embracing neurodivergent traits, both in ourselves and in our families, can lead to growth, connection, and transformation.
Episode 1: Mark’s Journey with His Son James
In this episode, Mark reflects on his experience raising his neurodivergent son, James, and how it led him to create the Dads Fire Circle, a space for fathers to come together, share their challenges, and offer support. Mark's advocacy for families of children with additional needs is driven by his personal journey and his desire to build a supportive community for others. His story is also a testament to how siblings, like his daughter Phoebe, navigate their own roles within a neurodivergent family with compassion and resilience. Mark's experience highlights the power of community, celebrating small victories, and fostering an environment where families can support one another.
Episode 2: Donna’s Self-Discovery Through Her Son’s Diagnosis
Donna’s story begins with her son’s ADHD diagnosis, which led her to recognise her own neurodivergent traits. Through understanding her ADHD and its relationship with her OCD, Donna was able to make sense of past struggles with focus and mental energy. She also shares how embracing her neurodivergent traits has shaped her approach to self-care, including journaling and meditation, which help her manage both her ADHD and OCD symptoms. Donna's journey underscores the importance of early diagnosis, self-awareness, and the role of family support in building resilience and practical strategies for living with neurodivergence.
Episode 3: Haley’s Resilience Across Generations
Haley's journey spans several generations, demonstrating the power of resilience and understanding in neurodivergent families. Growing up in Ohio, Haley faced learning disabilities that weren’t diagnosed until college. Her own diagnosis brought clarity to her struggles and motivated her to advocate for her younger brother, who faced similar challenges. In addition, Haley’s mother was diagnosed with ADHD at age 68, which deepened their family’s connection and understanding of the neurodivergent traits they shared. Today, Haley uses her passion for both science and art as a medical illustrator, embracing her neurodivergent traits and advocating for better understanding within her family.
Episode 4: Aldon and Emma’s ADHD Relationship Journey
Aldon and Emma’s relationship began with a serendipitous swipe during the pandemic, leading to a connection that deepened as they navigated their own experiences with ADHD, Aldon with a formal diagnosis and Emma without. Together, they have embraced their neurodivergent traits and found ways to make them work to their advantage. Aldon’s planning tendencies and Emma’s spontaneity balance each other out, creating a dynamic where they can navigate challenges with humour and understanding. Whether exploring the arts scene in Brooklyn or preparing for an adventurous trek through the Arctic Circle, Aldon and Emma show how ADHD can enrich a relationship, making it stronger and more vibrant.
Episode 5: Pat’s Experience Raising a Neurodivergent Son
Pat shares his experience raising his son, Will, who has both autism and ADHD. Growing up in Baltimore, Will faced significant challenges in finding an educational system that could meet his needs. It wasn’t until his nursery school teacher suggested developmental testing that Pat and his wife learned the full extent of their son’s neurodivergence. Pat’s journey involved navigating the US education system and advocating for Will’s needs through Individualised Education Programmes (IEPs) and various therapies. His story highlights the importance of early intervention, building strong support systems, and embracing neurodivergent traits as opportunities for growth, rather than obstacles to overcome.
Episode 6: Cara’s Self-Awareness and Family Support
Cara’s journey of understanding ADHD is one of self-awareness and building stronger connections with her family. After her own diagnosis, Cara was able to gain clarity about her neurodivergent traits, which helped her understand and connect with her loved ones in new ways. She emphasises the importance of fostering open communication, prioritising support networks, and creating a compassionate family environment where everyone’s neurodivergent traits are understood and embraced.
